OOCA: Engineering & The World We Live In

For the course, and by the end of the semester you will need to write a reflective paper and produce a multimedia presentation with Google Earth.

More details will come, but basically, from the readings and thinking you have been doing thus far you will need to select an area of technology, or an artifact from engineering. What this means is that you will 1) select a topic, relating to technology and engineering. 2) You will then learn more about this topic. 3) You will look at the history of this. 4) You will look at this topic from a global perspective. 5) You will link the technology to advancements in engineering, and 6) You will discuss the impacts of this area on society.

Be sure to select ar area that is interesting to you. Today can you write your initial feelings:

1) what topic is most interesting so far?
2) what questions do you need to answer about this topic?
3) what do you know about the history of this?
4) how do you see this technology in different areas of the world?
5) what is the connection to engineering?
6) discuss the impact of this technology on the world.

You can write feeling or short answers today. It is not a test, I just want to see where you are.

Steve

  1. 1) what topic is most interesting so far?
So far, my biggest is attention about turbines, particularly for the gas turbine.

    2) what questions do you need to answer about this topic?
?????? Sorry did not understand the question

    3) what do you know about the history of this?

In 1500: The "Chimney Jack" was drawn by Leonardo da Vinci which was turning a roasting spit.
in 1551: Taqi al-Din invented a steam turbine, which he used to power a self-rotating
in 1930: Sir Frank Whittle patented the design for a gas turbine for jet propulsion.
    ………………………………………………..

    4) how do you see this technology in different areas of the world?
It is one of the most important technology in our maunder ,Without them there would be no planes or electricity because the gas turbines are the basis for these things

    5) what is the connection to engineering?
Its could take the first priority because all most all engineering stuff in our days is rotate to it

    6) discuss the impact of this technology on the world.
This technology change all the world. It’s the firs way to preduce the electricity and without electricity there is no life.

  2. 1- Actually, I am fond of the rocket topic.

2- When was the first flight performed by a rocket?
Who was the first person who rode a rocket?
Who sponsored the construction of the first rocket?
What’re the parts of a rocket?
Where was the first travel to?

3- According to Wikipedia, the history of rockets goes back to the 13th century in china. Some says that China was the first to use rockets against Mongols hordes.

4- There are many uses for rockets rather than transportation.
    Military (Missiles)
Rescue (the emergency flying system attached to seats)

5- Building rockets is a work of an engineer; it connected to engineering in many ways. Dealing with tiny materials, engines and energy efficiencies’ all of that connects to engineering.

6- The rocket technology made a huge revolution in the military section and from other side, people like to travel to the outer space and that would refresh the economy in many ways which the price of a one ticket will be very expensive.

  3. 1. The topic that I’m interesting with is about the laptops in general.
    2. The questions that I like the article to answer it are:
    • Their features
    • The history
    • The uses
    • The connection between the laptop and engineering
    3. I know that laptops became feasible in the early of 1970. The I.B.M. 5100, the first commercially available portable computer, appeared in September 1975, and was based on the SCAMP prototype.
    4. Now all the people in the world can communicate with others by it. It can be used for hitting your enemy.
    5. The mechanical and the electrical engineering have a big effect on the laptops. The shape needs a mechanical and the screen needs an electrical.
    6. These devices make the world more accurate and professional. By carrying the laptops to home, employs can work without any pressure.

  4. Hi,
I’m interesting about the space craft and traveling in space. However there are some questions that I need to answer it about this topic first of all I wonder how the astronaut’s s eats? How to they live in space? How many mounts does it take them to come back to the earth? How can they use the bathroom?. I know some information about the history of the space craft “1961
On April 12, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, in Vostok 1, became the first human to orbit Earth. On May 5, U.S. astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr. of the Mercury 3 mission became the first American in space”. This technology helps people to know some features about the space and the others plant also it helps the scientist to think about different devices such as satellite that helps to send signal throw the space and that connect the earth with a few single . furthermore, is that it connect to the engineering in a way that they design the space craft to product the space man and let them feel like that they are in their own home. Finally, this technology has a huge impact for the world because it helps to learn about the astronomy.
    Thanks a lot
I hope you enjoy my topic

  5. Hello,
My interesting article was about GPS System. I can answer many questions about GPS System such as:
    1. What is the history of GPS System?
    2. What are the benefits of GPS System?
    3. How can we use a GPS System?
    4. Where does GPS System get the information from?
    5. What are the disadvantages of GPS System?
    6. How will people improve GPS System in the future?

“GPS System was invented by the U.S. Department of Defense (D.O.D)” (inventors.about.com, 2009). It is not really old device however, it is a modern technical device. As I know, Dr. Ivan Getting is the inventor of the GPS System.

GPS System changed the world so much. It helped people to know the location very easily and quickly.
It is used for navigation, mapping, location, and tracking. It has more and more benefits. Regarding engineering, GPS System works with satellite and gets information from it. The engineers have done good work to improve the GPS System for example, it was very big device in the past, but it is a small device and easy to use. You can also find it in your mobile phone and use it everywhere.

Finally, I want to say that GPS System is useful to use for navigation and finding sites or locations. It connects countries together just like your own country by showing you the location of places and streets.
    Thanks a lot…

  6. To start with, the topic that was most interesting to me the one that was about jet packs from the article that I’ve got from Mr. Richard. There are some questions that they need answer and they are:
    1. Scientists and engineers are working on them and they’ve made some examples, but the question is when it will be mainly released?
    2. Will the jet packs help us in our real life and how?
    3. What problems the jet packs have till now from the scientists and engineers experiences?
    4. Will it be safe if we used it in our real life in future?
About the jetpacks history, the jetpacks were first used by the Germans in the World War 2 and they called it sky stormer, but after the war they forgot about it and it was nearly to be extinct. Then the jet packs development started from 1959 by Americans till these days they are working on it. As I see from my vision it depends on the place where we are going to use this kind of technology. The connection between the jetpacks and the engineering is the jetpacks are kind of technology and the things in it like it’s part and operation are related to engineering, so this is how there is a connection between the two. The impact of this technology don’t know what it will until it be published mainly round the world.

  7. F-16 fighting falcon is a wonderful article I read it about. It is interested topic because I keen on about airplanes.
    1-What are best planes between F-16, F-11, F-15?
2- Which countries that purchased F-16 planes?
3- What is problem for this plane?
4- What company those manufacture for this plane?

The F-16A, a single-seat model, first flew in December 1976. The first operational F-16A was delivered in January 1979 to the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. The F-16B, a two-seat model, has tandem cockpits that are about the same size as the one in the A model and it is brief history for F-16 fighting falcon. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/f-16ab.htm

I saw these planes in Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Also this plane focuses maneuverable on these wars. Also these planes connect kind of engineering for example the mechanic for engines and aeronautical engineering. Also this plane is dangerous impact because this plane use in wars and it is destroy countries and lands. In my opinion this planes was banned because this plane influence the peace on the world.

  8. You Power is the intrested topic that i've seen so far . How many experiments they have to do to make this device? and do they need to make their experimets on human bodeis or animals like mouses and rabbets?? .. when i'm going to talk about the history of this device, i guess i know nothing, but i'll in future... About this device there are two ways of using it, other one is that they can build a small bomb and destroy whatever they want whenever they will... this kind of machine is unfortunatly engineering technology invention. As I see from my answers that it will make the world in different way than it's now, by moving us a steps up the yard and make using things by our hands when we need to, also the payment for the electricity will going down .
the polution also will decerease sharply... thats what i know for now,
    my regards

  9. 1. The most interesting topic is mobile phone.
    2. How the mobile phones will be in 2020? What was the first mobile phone in the world? Who was the first person was used the mobile phone?
    3. In 1954, the first mobile phone was introduced with 0G.
    4. This kind of technology are very famous now a days and very important and it’s everywhere in the world.
    5. There is a big connection between engineering and mobile phones because the system of mobile phones is made with engineering person.
    6. It’s makes the world a small village because u can connect anybody in the world from your house

  11. Wonderful choice of topics gents, although we are still waiting for a few more students to post.

Khalid I am glad to see your interest with the gas turbine. I agree that there are obviously strong connections with engineering.

Mohammed the F-16 is an amazing aircraft indeed, and there is a lot available to read on this. This will be a cool topic to follow.

AK9, You Power is a winner for sure. I would like to learn more about this myself. Very interesting choice indeed.

Submarines Adnan - also a great topic. It looks as if we have a lot of military interests in this class. Thats interesting.

Fayez and your jet packs will also be an area we can all lear a lot from. It will be fun to see the past and look into the predicted future of jet packs. Did you see the movie Ironman?

Yousef and your interest in rockets, this has a strong link to IT and computing I think. Is this an angle you were going to look at. Please also think of the political implications and revisit the recent situation in Gaza, as well as the past (if you feel this fits).

GPS Omar will be very fun to learn about and I think we can connect it to rockets somehow? Can you see a link there?

Mobile phones are also very interesting Abdullah. Ohh hoo they have changed to world and the way people go about day to day life. I can't wait to see what you produce here.

Mohamed Ali and your interest in laptops is very useful for us, especially as a college that just went to a laptop campus. We sure have had some lessons here - I would like to see what you can find on laptops. Great choice.

Mohammed Al Matrooshi and space travel. This is also very interesting, and connected to several of the other topics listed. I have always wondered why the US had landed on the moon in 1969 and 40 years later it appears to be a non-regular activity. One would think that with all of the technology moon travel would be as common as going to Dubai.

Love the choices you guys have made here, really superb projects will emerge. Thanks guys, and fot those whom have not posted, please do so.

Regards and the have a great weekend

  14. Hi Guys,
I am very impressed and interested by the topics you have pursued here, and I wanted to add some further comments to Steve’s.

KHALID – I have seen your interest in turbines develop over a couple of years. I think you could seriously consider specializing in this area if it interests you so much. Gas turbines are used in a lot of different situations – is there one use for turbines that you like more than the others?

YOUSEF - with rockets you have chosen something that interests me a lot (anything that flies in fact!). I think it is useful to distinguish different areas of use for rockets (as you have done). Is there one area that interests you more? Rocketry for transport is continuing to develop, as it is still the only effective way we can put spaceships and satellites into orbit. It is also an important part of many designs for future low-orbit airplanes. Military rockets also affect our world in important ways, not least because of the large numbers of atomic weapons that need them.

MOHAMMED ALI – great topic Mohammed. One of the main things that have made laptops possible is miniaturization. The number of components that can fit on a microchip has got bigger and bigger, so we can have more computing power in a smaller space (check the meaning of MOORE’S LAW). How do you see increasing miniaturization affecting computers in the future? Some people are talking about computer microchips in our clothes, in our food (so we can know when the food is bad, poisonous etc.), and even inside our bodies.

MOHAMMED RASHED – space travel is one of my favourite topics, so I will try not to write too much! You have asked questions about how people might live in Earth orbit, how they can eat, wash, use the bathroom etc., all good questions. There are plans for space travel to far places like the Moon (America and others want to have a base there) and to Mars. What other questions can we ask about long journeys in space? A journey to Mars could take years. What would people eat on such a long trip, what effects would zero gravity have on their bodies, how would they survive on Mars (or the Moon)? Engineering and technology can help with many of these questions. And don’t forget UNMANNED machines (robots). We have sent robot probes to a lot of planets, for instance to Saturn and its moons, and the USA still has two robot vehicles exploring Mars at the moment (the Mars Rovers). In many ways, engineers are even more important, because these machines must travel and operate without people nearby.

OMAR – I think GPS is something that people in the past couldn’t imagine, and the devices have become common very quickly. Remember that GPS is a SYSTEM though. The device you have in your car is only the end product of a very big system. Perhaps you could also look into the wider system and a little bit of the history.

FAYEZ – I would also recommend the video Steve has given you the link to. Perhaps this is where the future of personal flight lies. This is one man with a talent for engineering – maybe there are more people out there who, like Leonardo Da Vinci, dream of flying and have decided to make their dream reality. Maybe you can find them and compare their designs, or simply compare the jet pack to the “personal airplane” in the video.

MOHAMMED RABBA – the F-16 is a wonderful aircraft. As pilots say, “if it looks good, it probably is good” and the F-16 looks very good. Although the basic design is over 30 years old, engineers are constantly updating it and creating a new system. As you know, the F-16E, operated by the UAE air force, is the latest version. One thing you could look at might be the evolution of the F-16, from F-16A/B to F-16 C/D to F-16E/F. Another way to go might be to compare the latest F-16 with the new generation of fighters like the F-22 Raptor, Su 37, SAAB Gripen, Eurofighter Typhoon and the French Rafale.

AHMED KHALFAN – You Power is one of those topics that made me say “wow!” when I first read about it. It sounds obvious, but it is difficult to develop the technology. Now we have NANOTECHNOLOGY which is able to build very very small devices. The phone charger in your clothes in the article uses nanowires, for example. You might want to investigate Nanotechnology a bit more to give you some background.

ABDULLA SALEH – I like the fact that you have stayed with the same topic for some months Abdulla, and that you are developing it. I think miniaturization is a very important factor here (have a look at what I wrote to Mohammed Ali). Smaller and smaller components mean engineers can include more and more functions in a phone. What other functions do you think will be included in mobile phones in the future? What about video phones or watch phones?

ADNAN – submarines are amazing machines as they have to operate in very difficult conditions. Some of the military subs are bigger than the biggest surface ships (except aircraft carries), with double hulls that makes them very difficult to damage. They are incredible engineering solutions. They also operate in an unusual world of sonar and sound. Last week two submarines crashed because they were both using ANTI-SONAR and couldn’t see each other. I look forward to seeing where you take this.

    See you next week,

    Richard

  15. Hey late as always
To be honest my reading isn't up to your expectation although, I did read couple of articles from here and there about smart homes by How Stuff Work web site and others. I'm planning to build my own house soon so I guess this answer your first question.
The idea of smart homes are to control lighting, heating, air conditioning and adjusting electrical appliances at home by remote-control by any distance also reducing the cost of the construction by using modern and economic solutions. This technology is out there for some time now and it has been used widely by people who can afford it. I hope I did answered some of your questions of not all
