Geohistorical aspects and a glossary

Tonight post the following. 1) Your first sentence with a date and nation (e.g. the space shuttle was first designed in America in 1981). Then list the words you have in your glossary thus far. See how many you can get.

Thanks

Be aware that the second draft is due soon (see post below)

Draft 2: April 30 or Before

Draft 2 is due on April 30, or before giving you just about three weeks for this revision. 10% will be deducted for every day that it is late. Remember that this is a draft, but works should be cited properly. You can work with a partner on this but if there are problems collaborating you are still responsible for getting your work done. The team work is a choice you can make.

For draft 2, the class posed the final rubrics:

1. 10 Blogs = 1 pt each = 10%
2. 4 additional articles = 10%
3. Glossary of 20 key words = 10%
4. Word limits = 30%

500-800 = 5%, 800-1200 = 10%, 1200-1600=20%, 1600-2000 = 30%

Must not include large block quotes. Only your writing here.

5. Materials section = 40%

Materials: A New Chapter

You have decided to include Ahmed's project into the current paper. Richard has discussed it with you and you have started to mindmap the common materials between two technologies. As a group (of 2) write down your team (2 names) and the 2 technologies you are looking at. Then, describe the common materials - and finally mention the 1 you will focus on in light of Ahmed's project.

Give a little detail on the material this evening. Where did it originate? What time frame? Which nations? Why are the properties of the material important.

Have fun making connections.

Steve

Draft 2

In draft 2 you will need to improve your writing, and build upon draft one. Remember that the work you give must be your work. It must be original. If you use large quotes they MUST be referenced AND this is one rule that just never changes.

For draft 2, the class posed the final rubrics:

1. 10 Blogs = 1 pt each = 10%
2. 4 additional articles = 10%
3. Glossary of 20 key words = 10%
4. Word limits = 30%

500-800 = 5%, 800-1200 = 10%, 1200-1600=20%, 1600-2000 = 30%

Must not include large block quotes. Only your writing here.

5. Materials section = 40%

Today, write a response to the following.

You have evaluated your own paper, and this was later checked by your instructor. How does this make you feel? What is a good point about self-evaluations? What do you need to change to do better on the next draft?

Thanks

Steve

Richard Week 6 Read and Reflect

Good afternoon guys,

This week I would like you to continue building up your Reading Portfolio. Find another couple of articles on similar (but not the same) technology topics.

How do the topics of the two articles relate to each other?

What do you know about the background to the technologies (history, geography, materials etc.)? What would you like to find out?

Choose three words (in total) from your two articles that you did not know, or did not know well.
What are they, why are they important in the article (s)?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Richard Week 5 Why is background and context important?

Good evening lads.

Please take some time to reflect on the research you have done to find out more about the background to your chosen technologies.

What new information did you find which really interested you?

Why is it important to know as much as possible about a technology you are studying?

I look forward to reading your posts.

OOCA: Engineering & The World We Live In

For the course, and by the end of the semester you will need to write a reflective paper and produce a multimedia presentation with Google Earth.

More details will come, but basically, from the readings and thinking you have been doing thus far you will need to select an area of technology, or an artifact from engineering. What this means is that you will 1) select a topic, relating to technology and engineering. 2) You will then learn more about this topic. 3) You will look at the history of this. 4) You will look at this topic from a global perspective. 5) You will link the technology to advancements in engineering, and 6) You will discuss the impacts of this area on society.

Be sure to select ar area that is interesting to you. Today can you write your initial feelings:

1) what topic is most interesting so far?
2) what questions do you need to answer about this topic?
3) what do you know about the history of this?
4) how do you see this technology in different areas of the world?
5) what is the connection to engineering?
6) discuss the impact of this technology on the world.

You can write feeling or short answers today. It is not a test, I just want to see where you are.

Richard, Week 3 BBC Video

Good evening - hope you had a good weekend.

For your blog post this week I would like you to summarise the news video you watched on the BBC web site. You should have been able to give what you saw some thought, as you made notes and discussed things with your classmates.

So please post the following:

- a summary of what the video news report was about
- your opinion of (or reaction to) the content of report and why you have this opinion

Please also post the LINK to the video, as I will ask all of you to go and look at other students' videos later in the week.

Thanks,

Richard

Richard, Week 2

Good afternoon guys.

Please choose one of the short articles from the collection we looked at on Wednesday. Read it and think about it. You can also look up any important words you don't know.

You can use this link to help you understand:

http://www.newscientist.com/gallery/mg20126921800-ten-scifi-devices-that-could-soon-be-real

Think about the questions below and write your reponse.

What interested you about your choice of technology?
Do you think we will have to wait long to see this technology in the real world?
Do you think there may be probelms with this technology? What problems? Why?

Thanks. I look forward to reading your posts.

Richard, Week 1

Welcome to the 2TA blog from me. I know that most of you have already been here, and you are seeing how useful it can be to think about your studies and, in this case, about your reading. I hope you will use it to expand the way you see technology. You have probably realized that technology is something I am very interested in, and I am very happy to be working with students who share my interest. This semester I want to explore the whole world of technology with you.

Yesterday (Monday) you started making mind-maps in groups on large sheets of paper. I would like you to choose an area from your mind-map and find one article which is related to it. I would like you to do the following with it:

1) Tomorrow (Wednesday) – update your mind-map by adding the topic of your article
2) Also tomorrow (Wednesday) – please give me a copy of the article so I have an idea what you are reading.
3) Think about the following, and put your thoughts on the blog:
- Which area of technology is your article about?
- How does your article connect to the mind-map?
- Is the writer positive, negative or neutral towards the technology in the article?
- Imagine you are explaining your article to a friend. What are the main points you would talk about?

Please post your ideas by the end of the week. If you do not you will lose credit.

Thanks

Richard

Day Three

Wednesday, Feb 4, you asked for an OOCA for period 13 (7:20-8:15). Today you have been given a page, or selection of pages, from the National.

Your job is to read one or two of the articles, and answer the following:

What was the title of the article?
What was the main idea of the article?
What was an interesting point made in the article?
What are other topics that are related to the article?
What way does the article connect to you (if it does)?

Your post should be 100-200 words. If you do not post before 8:15 on Wednesday you will be marked absent.

Have fun - keep the article for your reading portfolio

Steve

Day Two

Yesterday we looked at many areas and topics related to technology. You found three articles and posted a quick summary on eBlogger. Today, please copy and paste the following starting point, but be sure to add a lot more.

Yesterday I found three articles related to technology on the internet. I looked at articles that address: ___(topic 1)__, ___(topic 2)__, ___(topic 3)__. In the following short writing I want to expand on yesterdays findings and share more of the information from the articles.

In article 1, about ___(topic 1)__, three points that were made were: 1, 2, 3. (write 30 - 50 words from the article).

In article 2, about ___(topic 2)__, three points that were made were: 1, 2, 3. (write 30 - 50 words from the article).

In article 3, about ___(topic 3)__, three points that were made were: 1, 2, 3. (write 30 - 50 words from the article).

The article that is most interesting to me is article (?). I think this way because .... (write 30-60 words connecting the content to your interests or your life).

Reading, Writing, and Portfolios

I have a lot of interests, especially related to engineering and technology. Today I will write about the questions I have regarding helping students build their reading and writing skills. At the HCT, students usually make big promises, and then at the end of a semester find ways out of their work. One area that is of particular interest to me is how to help students keep motivated to improve and develop their reading and writing skills since this is the area many have most difficulties. Let me express my basic views on reading, writing, and portfolios to assist both.

Reading is something you need to do, and do a lot of it in order to improve. As a second language speaker of English you need to spend time reading English if you want to improve the skill. It takes time, but the time you spend will open doors for you later. To get good – you need to read. You need to read a lot about things that 1) interest you, and 2) build you general knowledge about the world we live in.

Writing is something we also need to develop. It is my feeling that one (and just one way) to help build our writing skills is to write a lot. We can write about what we are reading – and this will help you communicate what you are learning from readings. Most importantly writing will help you build long-term memory from what you are reading about and the act of writing will help you build the skills you need related to literacy in English.

A portfolio should be something you are interested in. I feel you can all develop reading and writing is you have a portfolio of readings which are accompanied by written reflections. You should review the portfolio daily. This is where I see things go wrong – daily. At the beginning of last semester we all agreed that there were more than 4 months in the semester or about 120 days. This is a long semester. We agreed that 20 readings (from Google Alerts) would be easy – at in the end some could do it. Most did not. Most copied 20 articles at the end of the semester and handed them in. This is NOT an effective way to develop and I think you will probably agree.

So today your task is to tell me, what three area you hope to read about. If you know of more areas please tell me. Make three Google Alerts from you list and tell me which three you have selected and why. State if you agree that the goal I have (a better portfolio) is a good idea or not.

I am interested in hearing from you. You will reflect here frequently.
