April 1 Deadline is Coming

Just to make the goals public for you I am listing them below. Please respond to this blog and simply state which numbers you need to work on. Please have the first draft in by next Wednesday.

I am very happy to see the progress we are making so far. Keep up the great work.

So, as we have discussed last night, you can be working on the following:

1) Printing off and reading articles (you should have at minimum 10 now)
2) Should have a cover page and table of contents
3) Including 5 articles into your paper as of now (reference and referring to)
4) PPT should be an appendix
5) A webspiration mind-map should be there
6) A sketch should be there with components and materials listed
7) A materials section should be there
8) You should have been making contributions on the blog
9) You should be well over 500 words now (put word total on cover page)
10) Hand this to me by April 1 as a preliminary draft

You can use the following to grade it:

Name: ___________________________________
Class: _______________
Date: _______________

1) ___/10 articles = ____/10
2) Cover page with word total (5) and contents (5) = _____/10
3) 5 articles (2 pts each) = ____/10
4) PPT in appendix exported to word. Yes/No = 0 or 10 / 10
5) Webspiration mind-map. Yes/No = 0 or 10 / 10
6) Sketch included somewhere in paper. Yes/No = 0 or 10 / 10
7) Materials section. 3 pts for title/6 pts for some elaboration/ 10 for a thorough
preliminary job = 0 or 3 or 6 or 10 / 10
8) Have you made contributions to the blog? Yes/No = 0 or 10 / 10
9) 0 words = 0. 100-300 words = 6. 300-500 = 8. 500+ = 10/10. _____/10
10) Handed in on time. Yes/No = 0 or 10 / 10

Total = ______/ 100

Keep this in your research log when finished

Richard Week 6 Read and Reflect

Good afternoon guys,

This week I would like you to continue building up your Reading Portfolio. Find another couple of articles on similar (but not the same) technology topics.

How do the topics of the two articles relate to each other?

What do you know about the background to the technologies (history, geography, materials etc.)? What would you like to find out?

Choose three words (in total) from your two articles that you did not know, or did not know well.
What are they, why are they important in the article (s)?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Richard Week 5 Why is background and context important?

Good evening lads.

Please take some time to reflect on the research you have done to find out more about the background to your chosen technologies.

What new information did you find which really interested you?

Why is it important to know as much as possible about a technology you are studying?

I look forward to reading your posts.

Richard

WRITE A PAPER USING WEBSPIRATION

Go to webspiration, and open the template "WRITE A PAPER USING WEBSPIRATION" and start to put ideas you have for your term paper here.

When you are done, do two things:

1) copy and paste your draft version here (even if it is not finished) I want to see how far you are getting. Include the list of references (readings) that you have thus far.

2) paste this document into Google Docs, and add me as a collaborator. My e-mail is stephen.pellerine@hct.ac.ae so you can just copy and paste this.

Enjoy

OOCA: Engineering & The World We Live In

For the course, and by the end of the semester you will need to write a reflective paper and produce a multimedia presentation with Google Earth.

More details will come, but basically, from the readings and thinking you have been doing thus far you will need to select an area of technology, or an artifact from engineering. What this means is that you will 1) select a topic, relating to technology and engineering. 2) You will then learn more about this topic. 3) You will look at the history of this. 4) You will look at this topic from a global perspective. 5) You will link the technology to advancements in engineering, and 6) You will discuss the impacts of this area on society.

Be sure to select ar area that is interesting to you. Today can you write your initial feelings:

1) what topic is most interesting so far?
2) what questions do you need to answer about this topic?
3) what do you know about the history of this?
4) how do you see this technology in different areas of the world?
5) what is the connection to engineering?
6) discuss the impact of this technology on the world.

You can write feeling or short answers today. It is not a test, I just want to see where you are.

Richard, Week 3 BBC Video

Good evening - hope you had a good weekend.

For your blog post this week I would like you to summarise the news video you watched on the BBC web site. You should have been able to give what you saw some thought, as you made notes and discussed things with your classmates.

So please post the following:

- a summary of what the video news report was about
- your opinion of (or reaction to) the content of report and why you have this opinion

Please also post the LINK to the video, as I will ask all of you to go and look at other students' videos later in the week.

Thanks,

Richard
